FOOSPONG

FoosPong investigates game culture and seeks to investigate the digitization and mechanization of games through the blending of different and often conflicting game design choices in games like Pong and Foosball. These opposing design choices are further explored by the juxtaposition created by pitting an analog player against a mechanical player.

FoosPong is a piece born out of quarantine. It embodies my frustrations with finding inspiration and drive for new pieces, as well as finding the passion and willpower to finish what I have started. The work is made of materials that I could easily find online and within East County, like plywood and the many motor parts I ordered. Every item that was not easily available commercially, I made by hand, and as such, FoosPong embodies a DIY sensibility made visible through the presentation of the untreated plywood.

My process over the course of this project was one of freeform exploration constrained by my attempt to maintain the integrity of the Foosball table it was built around. As a result, FoosPong exists not only as its own piece, but as a design process for future projects.
